Public Legal Notice 2018-0407: Hawaiian Kingdom Court Setting Up a Court Calendar



We now have in place the Hawaiian Kingdom Court and we're setting up a court calendar for cases affecting kanaka maoli/kanaka Hawaii maoli ... our Judges are members of the Royal Families who were nominated and elected by the Sovereigns, and House of Nobles descendants/ heirs and successors. ESTHER T. MOOKINI Keopuolani, Sacred Wife, Queen Mother, 1778-1823 KEOPUOLANI, DAUGHTER OF KINGS, wife of a king, and mother of two kings, was the last direct descendant of the ancient kings of Hawai'i and Maui and the last of the female ali'i (chief) whose mana was equal to that of the gods. From May 1819 to March 1820 she was the central figure in the kingdom's history. Her husband, Kamehameha, had already united the islands under his rule. On May 8 or 14, 1819, he died in Kailua, Kona. It was during the mourning period that the ancient kapu system collapsed, and Keopuolani was instrumental in this dramatic change. Six months later, when her first-born son, Liholiho, heir to the kingdom, was challenged by Kekuaokalani, his cousin, Keopuolani, the only female ali'i kapu (sacred chief), confronted the challenger.
